Tips for Setting Up Your Blog

I found  a blog post that I thought was just brilliant.  Number one because the topic was interesting, and number two, because the post itself encouraged you to read further into the blog.

The post is Blog Setup: 40 Practical Tips.  The title itself is great, it is interesting and Google is going to love it.  Notice how the keywords come first, very important for SEO.  The post caught my eye because I am always looking for tips on how to set up a blog.  I am always starting new blogs, and anything that makes blogging easier or more profitable is of interest to me.

Opening the post I was surprised to find 40 links dealing with all sorts of blog topics.  Now I was just a bit annoyed that I would have to do more clicking to get the information I was after, but I had to admire the technique.   For the most part the links were to other posts in the same blog, but some were to outside posts.  All look interesting and I am going to be spending some time checking out the links.

The links were organized by topic. I found that very helpful, it is easy to get put off by a long list of random links.  With the links organized into sections it was easy to jump from topic to topic. For instance, I skipped right over the basics and went straight to the section on SEO and analytics.  Someone just starting out would probably start with the links on how to choose a hosting account.

All in all a great post from many different stand points. I think it is a format that I will be using in the future!

25 Free SEO Tips to Help you Gain Visibility in Search Rankings

By John Alexander

If you are not currently getting the Free SEO Tip of the Day, then you can sign up for it right here. Today, I wanted to share just 25 tips in this article that I hope you will enjoy. If you enjoy learning SEO and reading these tips, then why not consider registering for our Free tip of the day?

Now on with 25 tips to help you gain top visibility in the search rankings:

Tip 1. Enjoy better rankings by writing higher quality content.

Did you know Google is literally rewarding well-written content the benefit of “true relevancy.” All I mean to say here, is that just by becoming a better “writer” and creating higher quality content, you can benefit from certain elements that are at work behind the scenes. Strive to write better content for your visitors and it will work for you not against you.

Tip 2. How well “focused” is your content for each page you are working on?

If you try to keep very focused on one topic per page, you will do much better than having multiple topics on the same page. If your page is specifically about the “benefits of using nostalgia” as a topical reference, are you actually using the keyword phrase for example “using nostalgia” within your readable HTML text? So many times, new students of SEO forget about the importance of focus.

Tip 3. Where is the best place to get started?

One of the best places to get started is by researching your target audience’s search behavior. Ultimately, you want to target the exact phrases that your ideal buying audience is using when they search. Watch this short video demo on keyword research using Wordtracker for some tips.

Tip 4. Once you have got your keyword research done, you need to get started right away.

Some people are so completely overwhelmed that they put off actually getting started on their Web site for far too long.

Walt Disney put it simply like this:
“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”
Walter Disney

Of course he was not speaking about SEO but the principle still applies. Why not make a list of strategies that you like to apply on your Web site, but then take one single item and work on it immediately, until it gets done. Sometimes even the simplest of changes have significant impact and I always feel badly when I see anyone taking to long to “get started.”

Tip 5. Have you heard that “link building” is important?

Perhaps you’ve heard that link popularity and link reputation is important. It is important, but don’t become so obsessed with linking that you build your entire strategy only “just around link building.” You want to use all of the basic principles to carry your Web site through and you may want to do some linking based on the look of the “competitive landscape” for your keyword phrase.

You also want to build links based on what “makes sense” for your visitors.

Some search engines like Google give more weight to elements like link reputation which is an “off-page” influence while other search engines like Yahoo will give more weight to “on-page” influences such as your keyword phrase usage and how it is used on the page.

Tip 6. Have you read Google’s Webmaster guidelines?

It is good to check it from time to time as things do get updated and are subject to change.

Tip 7. What is important to Yahoo?

What does Yahoo! say it wants in a Web page?

  • Original and unique content of genuine value
  • Pages designed primarily for humans, with search engine considerations secondary
  • Hyperlinks intended to help people find interesting, related content, when applicable
  • Metadata (including title and description) that accurately describes the contents of a web page
  • Good web design in generalWhat 14 things does Yahoo! say it does “NOT” want in a Web page?Find out all of their guidelines here:
    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/search/basics/basics-18.html

Tip 8. What about researching important keyword phrases in other languages?

Are you wanting to perform keyword research in other languages?

What if you are trying to find keyword research suggestions for other languages such as Spanish or French or German? Now you can research keywords in several other languages including French, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish at Keyword Discovery. Check out Keyword Discovery by clicking here.

Tip 9. For effective search engine marketing, you need more than just top rankings.

Remember to include strong calls to action to compel a response from the reader.

What do you want the reader to do once they finish reading your content? You need to clearly build these options into each page and leave nothing to guess work. Describe what action you would like them to take and never assume that they will just know what to do, because they won’t act unless you spell it out.

Tip 10. SEO and Cascading Style Sheets.

An understanding of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) can help you with a number of SEO work-arounds to meet challenges with complicated design issues. W3Schools provides an excellent CSS tutorial free of charge, complete with a lot of examples and quizzes.

Tip 11. Don’t ever limit the search engines to only just one way of finding your pages.

Put links to new pages on your site map. Make sure you link to your site map from every page of your Web site.

If there’s a corresponding page on your site that you can use to link to the new page, do so. Mention the new page on your blog. Do you have a directory associated with the particular topic dealing with the content of this new page? Add a link on that page. Just make sure that you give the search engines multiple ways to find all of your important pages

Tip 12. How compelling are your Meta descriptions?

  • Are you remembering to use your important keyword phrase in the description?
  • Are you taking time to write unique descriptions for each of your pages?
  • How about a call to action?
  • Are you remembering to include good calls to action in your description?

Tip 13. Have you tried Fagan Finder?

This Web site has over 100 tools that you can use to dig for information on a URL. There are more nooks and crannies to this site than you can possibly imagine. http://www.faganfinder.com/urlinfo/

Tip 14. Do not obsess over Google Page Rank.

Did you know that a page with a high PageRank can be out ranked in the SERPs by a page with a lower PageRank? Remember that PageRank isn’t the “end all” in SEO. It’s only one piece of the pie.

Tip 15. Don’t use your keyword phrase in ALT text.

None of the search engines consider ALT text when determining relevancy. ALT text should be used only to describe images. Putting keywords in the the Alt tag to try and influence even a marginal advantage is a waste of time. Don’t do it. Use every tag for the purpose in which is was specifically designed to be used by the W3C.

Tip 16. Create content that serves your customer’s needs FIRST and your own needs second.

Far too often, our focus is so narrowly limited to just our own objectives for a Web page. One powerful tip is to first research the specific needs of your customer (within a niche) and then deliver up high value, based on your research and give the searcher EXACTLY whatever it is that THEY want, first.

Think about it – try it out and see what happens when you meet the client’s interest first, before introducing your own objective.

Tip 17. Are you using your researched primary keyword phrase prominently in your Title Tag?

The Title Tag of your Web page is still extremely influential for relevancy in most search engines. Try using your researched phrase once, up front in your Title and remember the value of creating a compelling Title that engages the reader. Avoid stuffing your Title full of keywords and instead create a compelling Title that reads well and accents a benefit.

Tip 18. Remember that most major search engines no longer look at the your Meta keyword tag when determining relevancy.

Use moderation and be careful not to over-use any single word multiple times in your keyword Meta tag.
Try and use approximately a half dozen words that are actually being used within the Web page content.

Tip 19. Do not use the same Title tags, Meta Keyword Tags and Description Tag on every page of your Web site.

Keep your Title, Keywords and Description all specific to the individual page you are working on, unless you want to get falsely flagged for duplicate content penalties.

Tip 20. Remember to use alternative synonyms sometimes instead of over using keywords.

Your Thesaurus can be your best friend or else watch this video on how you can choose semantically related keywords with the help of Wordtracker’s Full Search tool.

Tip 21. Check out Robin Nobles list of 148 muscle words you can use on your Web site

Here is Robin’s list of muscle or power words you can print out or save to your hard drive, words you can use on your site in your title and description tags along with your keyword phrase, and in your heading tags and your content.

Tip 22. Create content that deserves to be found within the top ranks.

One of the single most important aspects to managing your time well, is to stay focused on creating high value, original content that is useful and engaging to your visitors. What kind of content should your Web site contain?

  • Create content that is truly relevant (and honestly deserves to be found at the top.)

  • Create content that serves your customer’s needs FIRST and your own needs second.

  • Create content that will meet your visitor’s exact search query and satisfy it.

  • Create content your visitor will be GLAD that they found – something of true merit.

  • Create content that is based on real “behaviorally based research” rather than guessing at keywords.

  • Create content that is written for your specific visitor so that it flows smoothly and reads well to them.

  • Create content that is original and you can feel proud to have created.

  • Create content that has a solid, well written “call to action.”

  • Create content that is based on what a “search engine understands” through artificial intelligence (AI.)

Tip 23. Pay attention to keyword usage in page names. Use hyphens not underscores.

Be sure when naming pages after your full keyword phrase, that you connect
the words together using a hyphen (-) rather than an underscore (_)

Example: A search engine will understand: antique-clocks.html
but will not understand both words if you use: antique_clocks.html

How much advantage does this tip give you? Only marginal. But sometimes there is only marginal difference between ranking number 10 or ranking number 1.

Tip 24. Don’t forget to use optimization with your press releases.

Have you thought about optimizing some news about your business this week? You can put your news story out in front of thousands of publishers and editors through the PRweb service.

But the question is – what will your unique story angle be?

There are so many times we get so wrapped up in what our competitor is doing, we seem to forget the power and impact of taking a reverse or opposite approach.

Learn how to tell your story from a different and more interesting perspective than everyone else and your stories. Catch your audience by surprise with some genuine news and make your news story stand out in the eyes of publishers. Surprise your audience with a different approach and watch the impact it can have on your Web site. Its only news, but people love fresh ideas or a story told from an alternate approach.

Tip 25. Are you trying to increase the frequency of robot visits to your Web site?

Are you aware of the value of fresh, original content added to your Web site on a consistent basis? Of course you are. Does it real improve the findability of your Web site? You bet it does and it increases the frequency of the Spider visits too.

But how can you create truly “fresh” and “original” content?

There is one place you can pick up daily tips and fresh ideas about content creation. It all starts with just one simple “idea.” When was the last time you visited Robin Nobles “IDEA MOTIVATOR” Blog?

The No-No’s of SEO

Search Engine Optimization can be a daunting task; hence many bloggers succumb easily to the temptations of the ‘blackhat.’ Blackhat techniques violate the rules of SEO and provide bloggers who use it with unfair advantage over others.

On the other hand, most start-up bloggers do not know about SEO and they become innocent victims of Blackhat techniques. They are taught to use them not knowing that these SEO techniques are wrong.

Here are some Blackhat techniques to avoid:

Keyword Stuffing. This is when the webmaster fills the site with hundreds or even thousands of keywords. One of the oldest Blackhat techniques, keyword stuffing is different from optimization in that it involves keywords that are repeated in an irrelevant and illogical way.

These keywords are hidden by color blending (where the background color and text color are the same so humans can’t see it but search engines can), or by putting keywords in meta tags / script tags, or even by placing the keywords outside the visible screen area via cascading stlye sheets (CSS).

Link Farms. These are websites created only for the purpose of accommodating unrelated links. Avoid link farms because you can get penalized and banned for using them. Make it a point to know where links to your sites are coming from.

Auto Generated Pages. These pages consist of content automatically derived from other sites. No part of the page is original since it contains snippets of content taken from other sites.

Gateway Pages. These pages are usually invisible to the user and are designed for only the search engines to see. These use redirect scripts that leads site visitors to another site automatically.

On the other hand, some landing pages are acceptable. Landing pages that contain relevant information where the reader is not tricked to click or go to another site is fine.

Don’t try using these because you’ll get caught eventually. Work smart and work clean.

Why Most SEO Efforts Fail, And How To Make Yours Succeed – Part 2

In the first part of this SEO series Zeaun Zarrieff talked about optimizing your keywords and your meta tags for search engine optimization. Now he continues with how to optimize your page elements, and how to obtain backlinks.

Optimizing Page Element Arrangement.

Market research firms, and university studies, have found that most human beings read webpages from the top left. Search engine companies like Google, Yahoo, and MSN (Microsoft) have learned this and have programmed their search engine spiders to read pages in the same way. This ensures that their results are relevant and appealing to the users. You should take advantage of this by placing your strongest keywords in this area. if you have an image at the top-left like many pages do, then you should give the image a name that ties in with your subject. Believe me, an image named “img00944567.jpg” is less relevant to the search engine than “SEOstats.jpg”. A human being may never notice the difference, but the search engine will. ALT tags can be employed to as well, for greater SEO impact. Make sure that your text mentions the keyword right at the beginning, and a couple of times in the first couple of sentences. Try to fit in common synonyms and other related terms if you can without making your work seem cluttered or “stuffed”.

Obtaining Backlinks

This is perhaps the hardest and most expensive part of the process, unless you have a killer fan base and community behind you that will sing your websites praises and link to you at no cost. If you are not a rock-star, a politician, or me (just kidding) then you probably will need to solicit backlinks from one of a few sources.

  • Article Directories
  • Web Directories
  • Forums
  • Blogs
  • News Sites
  • Others

Article Directories and Web Directories abound on the internet. You should have no problem finding these. Some will charge you a fee to publish your article and/or link, while others will do it for free. In most cases you can make do with the free ones, but even with automated submission software (applications that automatically submit your hyperlink or article to online directories) it is a time-consuming process.
There are lots of companies and individuals who will submit your links and articles for you, at a cost. Look around and find one that fits in your budget and let them do the grunt-work. Just make sure they do list with the reputable directories with a midrange to high PR (Page Rank). Some shady submission companies will charge you a fee, and then just submit you to the directories that they already own (sometimes a process that takes mere seconds) which may not even be listed by the search engines, and thus would be of no benefit to you for SEO purposes.

Forums are weighted very heavily by search engines like Google when it comes to backlink quality, but your link from the forum must be formatted properly and seem relevant. This is where “anchor text” comes into play.

“Anchor text” is the visible label that you see on a hyperlink. Let’s do another example.

“I just bought a motorcycle from an online motorcycle dealer that treated me really well. You should check them out.”

In the above example there is a hyperlink that takes you to a site called “Ebay.com”. Now if I was posting a forum/blog entry for SEO purposes, (to make my site seem more important to a search engine) then this example is a perfect and natural-seeming way to link to the site being promoted. In the search engine’s eyes, the site “www.Ebay.com” moves up the ranks for the search term “motorcycle dealer”. Remember that if a web surfer already knows your full website URL (Uniform Resource Locator) then he/she will almost never search for it. They will just type it in and go there directly. So you gain nothing by linking to your site by name, except for name recognition which will come in due course if you promote properly.

If you neglect any part of this SEO tutorial, make sure it is not obtaining backlinks! No other SEO element is more important to the search engines. The more links you have, the more “buzz” the search engine assumes that your site has, and this gives you the biggest boost in rankings possible. If your backlinks are from sites that already have a high PR (Page Rank) you can almost literally ride their coat-tails up into the heights of search engine glory.

News sites probably won’t be reporting on your website unless you are very popular, unless you are very controversial, or unless you issue a very good press release. We’ll go into press releases another time, but for now just remember that if you really want to enter the big-leagues and get backlinks and mentions from major news outlets online, then you will need to tell them you are alive, and press releases are the way to do it.

And that covers most of the common SEO (Search Engine Optimization) methods and how to do them properly. There are other methods, to be sure. Some above board, and others very devious (so-called Black-Hat SEO), but you now have the information required to enter this vast, yet rewarding realm with your eyes open.

Now go forth and use your newfound power for good instead of evil.

Why Most SEO Efforts Fail, And How To Make Yours Succeed

Why Most SEO Efforts Fail, And How To Make Yours Succeed – Part 1

Why Most SEO Efforts Fail, And How To Make Yours Succeed
By Zeaun Zarrieff

Unfortunately most webmasters and internet marketers fail miserably at managing their search engine presence and rankings. While it is true that Google and the other popular search engines go to great lengths to keep their algorithms and determining factors secret, it is not impossible to accurately predict, and even manage (to a certain extent) how you will be seen, and thus ranked by the search engines.

Enter the billion-dollar industry of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

SEO is the practice of tailoring certain key elements of your websites to attract the interest of the search engine spiders, to increase your site’s perceived value, and to move higher in the ranks of search engine results.

The methods that are used to accomplish this, although made to seem mysterious and difficult by a veritable legion of “gurus”, are surprisingly simple and can be broken down into the following categories.

  • Optimizing keyword density
  • Optimizing meta tags (Page Title, description, keywords)
  • Optimizing page-element arrangement
  • Obtaining backlinks

Let’s take a short look at the first item, “Optimizing Keyword Density”.

Now why do you suppose that I didn’t say what most SEO “experts” do? They will usually phrase it “Maximizing Keyword Density”, but that advice, while perhaps accurate in the past, is now worse than ineffective. The maximization methodology today will actually hurt your ranking, not help it.

Keyword Density Optimization is really a very simple process. To put it succinctly, Keyword Density Optimization means “Not too much, and not too little:.

Google has done something which is really a stroke of genius. They have calculated how often in normal human-authored writings a word will be repeated naturally when that word is the subject of the writing itself. If your site doesn’t have enough mentions of a given keyword, you get ranked lower because Google decides that your page is not really relevant for that keyword. Thus you wind up lower on the scale than someone which Google decides is more relevant, and thus a better resource for their customers (the web surfers searching for the term).

The opposite end of the spectrum has its peril too. If your web page mentions a given term too often, and too close together, then Google will “penalize” your ranking as unnatural and potentially misleading.

For those not familiar with internet marketing this may seem like strange logic, but I assure you that it is sound. There is a practice called “keyword stuffing” which many internet marketers and webmasters have used to very lucrative results. Indeed many have become millionaires using this technique to draw traffic. But Google has gone to great lengths to stamp out this practice, at least where their search results are concerned.

So you should strive for keyword density that is natural and “normal”. There are certain percentages and formulas that I could share with you, but most of the people reading this article are probably beginners who need to learn the overall concepts before getting too deep into the mathematics and specifics. For now I recommend reading your content after you have written it out loud, as though you were having normal conversation or giving a speech. It should sound natural and normal without too much repetition of terms, but you should repeat your core terms (keywords) enough times in the text that a listener or reader never has a chance to forget what you are promoting, or are talking about. If you want more in-depth information about this or any of the topics discussed here, be sure to visit the link under my name below and sign up for my newsletter, where I go into a lot more detail.

Next up is optimizing meta-tags.

The meta tags that I am referring to here are the “Page Title”, “Description”, and “Keywords”.

Page title is exactly what the name implies. Generally I put the primarily targeted keyword for a given page right at the beginning of the title. This ensures that the search engine will read it first (page title generally is the first entry in the html code of a web page) and that your visitors and potential customers will see in the upper-left corner of their browser windows.

Let me give you a real-world example. Let’s say that I run a website called “www.myfirstwebsite.com” (I do incidentally) and I have a page about “SEO Techniques”. I would format the page title as the following:

“SEO Techniques and Strategies – Explained by My First Website Dot Com”

There is actually very good reason to format my title in this way. The first is because the Search engine, as it ready the HTML code that makes up my web page, will read “SEO Techniques” first. I then throw in the word “Strategies” to make sure that my page is seen as relevant in case the searcher chose the term “SEO Strategies” instead. From there I separate my website name into separate words so as to capture traffic for those individual words, and any combination of them.

Understand, search engines are not as smart as people. You and I can see the title “MyFirstWebsite.com” and our minds automatically separate the words into individual concepts instantaneously. The search engine, being a machine-driven program, doesn’t have it so easy. It has to match all of the letters against its database of English words and choose whether the phrase is a single word, or a mash-up of individual words. This process, takes time and processing power, something seen as a premium in the computing world. Therefore if another site already has those terms separated, they have an advantage, as the search engine sees it. So the page with the phrase “My first website” in the title (already separated) would be seen as more relevant than one with “MyFirstWebsite”, assuming that the searcher typed in “My First Website” as his/her search term.

So the moral to the story is, put your primary keyword at the beginning of your page title.

The same is true for our next topic, “Page Description”.

Start your description with the primary keyword, then move on to explaining why your site is the best for that particular thing or concept. Let’s look at another example:

Which description for a page about SEO is better?

  1. Why should you practice Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? We show you why.
  2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and why you must master it. A simple tutorial.

If you picked the first one, you really should go see if UPS is hiring. You probably don’t have the eye for Internet Marketing. Most of us can see that any description which makes the reader pass through 4 words before mentioning the thing they are searching for is really poorly written. And if you consider the fact that the vast majority of newbies (beginners) have no idea what the acronym “SEO” actually stands for, then the 1st example makes them pass through seven words before getting to the item that they are looking for (“SEO” in this case). And don’t forget that search engines are much less intelligent than we are. If a user searches for “SEO” and your page description doesn’t mention SEO until word number seven, then you have really hurt your chances of ranking highly for that keyword.

Now the 2nd choice is, in my humble opinion, a work of art. Look at what we have done.

  1. Mentioned the primary keyword (subject) first (SEO).
  2. Mentioned the secondary keyword second (Search Engine Optimization).
  3. Given a hidden (subliminal) command (“You Should Master It”.
  4. Used a “power word” (“Master”).
  5. Given a “newbie magnet” term (“simple tutorial”).
  6. Included a feel-good word (“simple”).
  7. Included a very common search term (“tutorial”).

Don’t be intimidated by the terms used above (newbie magnet, subliminal command, power words, etc.). There’s not enough space to go into them here, but my newsletter explains these all in detail. Let’s move on.

In part 2 of the series, Zeaun Zarrierff will talk about how to optimize your page elements, and how to obtain backlinks. Make sure you don’t miss the conclusion of this great article on search engine optimization by Subscribeing to The WebMaster Blog now.
