Prevent Repetitive Strain Injury, 3 Simple Techniques to Avoid Pain

I spend many hours every day on the computer. Offline I am a tax adviser so during the months of January to April I might spend 12 or more hours every day on the computer. And without fail by mid February I would have some form of RSI, Repetitive Strain Injury.

Repetitive Strain Injury

RSI refers to arm and hand pain that can occur when you perform the same motion over and over again. It is common in the computer world. For me, I would often get pain and weakness in my right forearm. I have been diagnosed with Tendinitis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I was prescribed wrist braces and pain relievers. But nothing seemed to really work. Surgery could not promise a cure, because the real problem was the amount of time I spent on the computer. It seemed like my only options were to live with the pain, or go on disability. I didn’t like either of those options.

Before I go on, I want to stress that I am not expert in Repetitive Strain Injury. I am just sharing with you what worked for me. Everyone’s situation is different and you should consult with your own professional advisers regarding your particular situation.

Avoid Using Braces or Splints

Short term these are OK, but if you use braces or wrist splints for an extended period of time the muscles in your wrist will weaken. With weak muscles you will not be able to support your wrists properly without the splints, and you run the chance of re-injuring yourself. Limit splint use to one or two weeks at most, and when you are not on the computer, do strength exercises that target the hands, wrist and arms.

Always use proper wrist position

Notice the wrists are straight and not resting on any supports.
Notice the wrists are straight and are not resting on any supports.

The funny thing here is that many devices that are designed to help prevent repetitive strain injury can actually make it worse. It is very important that you keep your wrists straight and in a neutral position. Using a wrist rest can put the wrists in a bent up position that can make repetitive strain injuries worse.

Put Your Hands in Your Lap!

This is actually the technique that made the most difference for me. When we spend long hours on the computer there are many times when our hands are not being used. It might be for less than a minute, but you may have your hand on your mouse waiting for a page to load, you may be thinking about what you are going to write next, or you may be watching a video. No matter how short a time, take your hands away from the keyboard, away from the mouse, and put them in your lap. By doing so you give your neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and hands several “mini breaks” during the day. All those little mini breaks add up and I found that even after a long 12 hour day I was still pain free.

As bloggers and webmasters we can spend many hours per day in front of the computer. By following these few simple techniques, you can drastically minimize your chances of getting a repetitive strain injury. So now tell me, while you have been reading this post, where have your hands been?

Updated Google Chrome TOS & SiteMeter Face Lift

Hi, as you all may already know, Kat will be away for a few days. I am here to deputize for her.

First of all, in the last post, Kat linked to a post on Veritable Life regarding the controversial Section 11 of Google Chrome’s terms of service (TOS). For those who have not read the post yet, apparently in the first version of Google Chrome’s TOS, by using Chrome to post, submit or display any content which belonged to you, you automatically also grant Google worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify and publish the same content.

However, on 4th September 2008, barely a few days after the release of Google Chrome, Google has come out with an official statement saying that Google Chrome’s TOS has been updated, more specifically the content of Section 11 has been altered to:

11. Content license from you
11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.

The updated Section 11 is rather short but it is effective and simple. Internet users can now use Google Chrome without worry. You don’t even need to download a new copy of Chrome, because this updated TOS is retroactive and will cover everyone who has downloaded Google Chrome since the first day it was launched.

By the way, hot off the stove is the news that SiteMeter has completed its migration and it has a face lift in the way site tracking reports are displayed. Site tracking reports are now displayed with Flash. Check out the screen shot on the right.

One of the most noticable changes is that now you can manage all your tracked sites individual accounts under one primary account with only one login and password required. Previously there was no way for users to link several individual accounts under one primary account, users have to keep many logins and passwords and spend a lot of time just to login, logout and relogin to view other accounts. On top of the primary account, SiteMeter users can also receive Stats by email for multiple accounts.

Premium account users can also enjoy several new features from SiteMeter such as Aggregate Reports, Dedicated Path Report, RSS Activity Report and Most Popular Pages report.

SiteMeter is one of the better site and visitor tracking services available. It is especially useful for webmasters whose host do not provide built-in tracking reports and also those using free blogging platforms such as Blogger which also lacks such a feature. If you need such a tool for your website, feel free to check out SiteMeter.

Question(s) of the day: Have you been using Google Chrome? What do you feel about it? What site statistics tools do you use for your websites?

Web naming rules to be relaxed

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has recently relaxed web naming rules after an unanimous board voting.

ICANN is a non-profit organization established in 1998. The internet watchdog is responsible to regulate the internet, regulate its integrity and set the rules for domain names registration.

Previously, domain names and especially top level domains (TLD) are tightly regulated and guarded, no offensive or trademarked domain names are allowed and only TLDs (besides the traditional .com, .org and .net) which add value can be registered.

In the recent ICANN board meeting, several key issues regarding web naming conventions have finally been resolved. This could effectively spell a new direction in the development of the internet. The decisions taken during the meeting are:

  1. Domain names with combination of numbers, letters and non-Latin characters will be allowed.
  2. Extended top level domains (TLD) such as .kids, .toys, .news and .cars could be registered.

These decisions would be welcomed by web vendors, developers and users alike. Most good English domain names have been taken and due to the restrictions placed by ICANN, many companies have resorted to weird sounding domain names. Now it is possible for web developers to grab hold of suitable domain names in other languages and top level domains. However, the opportunity would not come cheap, ICANN has hinted at a possible starting price of $100,000 for the registration of extended domain names.

Apparently, this move does not only excite the money-minded opportunists, but also patriots like Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who would like to see the use of languages other than English in the naming of web domains.

The year 2009 will be a year to watch out for, ICANN expects that companies and individuals will be able to register new domains under the new ruling in the first quarter of the year.

Bloggeries: A Directory for Blogs

In our continuous efforts to try and increase the ‘findability’ of our blog, sometimes, we do things that don’t make a lot of sense. We submit to random, back-alley directories. We waste so much time buying advertising on blogs that just won’t help us. And, we try out very best to comment on blogs, only to find out that the blogs we’re commenting on really don’t get much traffic. What, oh what, is a blogger to do?

Find Bloggeries. Bloggeries is a directory that specializes in blogs. While other directories have sections for all different kinds of sites, Bloggeries took that extra step and focused in on one thing: a blogger’s desire to be found. And, with a page rank of six and an Alexa of 87K, it’s definitely a site that could be beneficial in your growth to be found.

First and foremost, allow me to comment on the structure and design of the site. Although I don’t really like green for websites (just my own preference), this site does have a calming feel to it and keeps my eyes from growing cataracts. Right on the home page, in the center of the site, we can see a list of each of the sections. For example, there’s a section for science blogs, political blogs, humor blogs, just to name a few. That is exactly the place to have the sections; it makes their customer’s blogs easier to find.

On both sidebars, there are a series of different places you can visit on the Bloggeries’ website. The left sidebar includes the submission button, an affiliate button (which I will touch on later), as well as links to the many different resources Bloggeries offer. They have definitely created a directory that offers everything. Your one stop to being found.

Now comes the question everyone is probably asking. How much do they charge? It all depends on what you want. If you want a featured listing, which is found at the top of the category that you pick, it costs $49.99 annually. Is it worth it? Arguably. It depends if the niche is very populated and you want to get right to the top. However, if you don’t need to be on the top, the other form of getting listed is the regular link, which costs $29.99 once. For that cost, you get your link there for life. Not too bad a deal, if I do say so myself.

To suck you in, they argue that by getting a link from here, you’re increasing your chances of getting indexed because they consider themselves an authority directory. Back when Google went to war against link sellers, they said that authority directories that sold links would still carry weight IF there was a definite screening process. If you didn’t just approve any old blog, you’d still have the ability to carry link weight. Obviously, Bloggeries passed this. Furthermore, they offer much more in your submission. You can get a link right to your RSS feed which is definitely beneficial. Moreso, you get 3-5 deep links. The deeper you go, the longer the reader will stay.

There are numerous other resources found on this site. They have their forum, their recommended blog hosts, and their free WordPress themes. Overall, Bloggeries really is the one stop spot for all your blogging needs. However, one final question must enter your mind before forking over $30 to get a listing.

Is it worth it? Are you blogging to make money in the future? If so, I recommend signing up. Now that I’ve found it, I intend on submitting all of my blogs to the site as well. They’re authority links and we need those to become found. Should it be your only means of promotion, though? It shouldn’t be your first. However, put it on your list of ways to increase your ‘findability.’ It can’t hurt. Try Bloggeries.

Google To Launch “Friend Connect” On Monday

Don’t they say good things come in threes? Well, regardless, we
’ve heard from multiple sources that Google will launch a new product on Monday called “Friend Connect,” which will be a set of APIs for Open Social participants to pull profile information from social networks into third party websites.
